Thomas Guthrie joined the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme in September 2007 and made his Royal Opera House directing debut with Rita in the Linbury as part of Meet the Young Artists 2007. He also assisted the directors of Iphigenie en Tauride, the Royal Opera House Gala, Midsummer Night's Dream, The Minotaur and Ariadne auf Naxos and directed the septet, duet and octet from Capriccio for the JPYAP Summer Concert.
In the 2008/9 season, he will direct The Bear during Meet the Young Artists and assist the directors of the Royal Opera productions of La fanciulla del West, Hänsel und Gretel, The Beggar's Opera, I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Il barbiere di Siviglia.
A comedy about a battered husband sounds more appropriate to a soap opera or Jerry Springer than a bel canto drama from the mid 19th-century. But the ROH's Linbury Studio staged Rita, a little-known one-act opera by the great Gaetano Donizetti, which does indeed deal with the startling topic of spouse-beating.
18-20 October 2007
The Fugue, Duet and Octet from Richard Strauss's vocally and dramatically challenging Capriccio, conducted by Music Director of Opera North Richard Farnes, and staged by Thomas Guthrie.
Tanya McCallin's designs from The Royal Opera's production of Le nozze di Figaro provided the costumes and settings for the operas, which were accompanied in the pit by The Orchestra of Opera North.
