"A strong, reflective experience" ***** (five stars) The Telegraph

"An intensely theatrical production" Brighton Argus

A production for Brighton Festival
Director: Thomas Guthrie
Designer: Roger Butlin
Musical Director: Andrew Carwood / Cardinall's Musick

The year is 1557. Religious persecution is rife as Mary Tudor's reign of terror blazes across the country. Sixteen-year-old Thomasina - the youngest of the 17 Lewes martyrs - has reached a crisis of faith: be true to her own conscience and suffer the brutal force of church and state? Or bend to its will and live an unconscionable lie?

Written by Lewes-based Chris Dixon, directed by Thomas Guthrie (Fairy Queen, Festival 06) and performed in the evocative, candlelit setting of St. Bartholomew's Church, The Bootmaker's Daughter is a haunting new music/theatre production exclusive to Brighton Festival.

Thomasina's tragic story is brought to life as an ensemble cast of actors joins forces with The Cardinall's Musick, the Gramophone award-winning early music consort, led by Tudor maestro Andrew Carwood. Music from William Byrd to traditional tavern songs combines with fully staged drama as this remarkable tale of courage and conscience is played out in an intimate and atmospheric promenade performance.
